Limestone dissolutions has created a karst landscape across most of Florida. Sinkholes, the most widely known karst feature, are cone-shaped depressions formed when soil collapses into voids in the underlying limestone created by the dissolutions of the limestone by slightly acidic groundwater. A sinkhole often opens up when the water table is lowered either artificially or by drought, especially when these low-water conditions are followed by periods of heavy rainfall.

Other conditions that lead to soil instability in Florida include layers of near-surface swelling clays, layers of near-surface highly organic soils, unstable debris (i.e., trees) buried by unscrupulous developers, and placement of mine spoils in surface impoundments.
